The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suggested the implementation of front-of-pack labeling for packaged food items. The goal behind this is to ensure that consumers are provided with nutritional information that is present in the food.
The proposal is an indication of the FDA’s strategy to tackle diet-related diseases Such as obesity, diabetes, heart diseases, and many others. Furthermore, it helps people make better food decisions.
The use of the FOP nutrition information is more fancier than traditional NFP. This FOP nutrition info consists of calories, sugar, saturated fat, and salt levels. The FOP label is an optimized way to place nutrition info onto a specific area. It turns out to be more useful than placing the info on the sides of the packages. The purpose of FOP labeling is to provide essentials on the package to increase visibility. Thus it will enable buyers to make healthier and more informed decisions while purchasing.
The increase in health concerns related to food has gained the attention of the American public. Because diet seems to be the contributing factor in turning things bad. There are growing concerns amongst medical practitioners as obesity has become an issue. According to CDC estimates more than 42% of the adult population in the US seems to suffer from chronic disease. Naturally, a negative diet increases high chances of cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and type II diabetes.
Undoubtedly, front-of-pack nutrition labels can add to the prevention of the severity of different health conditions. With information directly present on the front side, buyers will be able to pick and purchase the items suitable for health. This could also force companies to modify their current products. Robert Califf, the FDA commissioner had said, “I think it’s also no secret that virtually everyone has someone they know and love who suffers from a chronic disease which is in large part self-inflicted by the food we eat,” in a featured statement. “People should be able to glance, grab, and go. It should be simple for the consumers to add the front-of-package nutrition labeling of their most packaged foods.”
